Recycling of pgm-containing scrap

Return to the list of questions or ask a question.

Category: Refining and Recovery

Subject: Recycling of pgm-containing scrap

Question

Can platinum group metals be recovered from used catalytic converters, electronic equipment etc?

Answer

Platinum group metals (pgms) including platinum, palladium and rhodium are used in many consumer goods including computer equipment, mobile phones and catalytic converters on cars, all of which can be recycled.

Information about the recycling of pgms can be found on the International Platinum Group Metals Association website.

In addition, news of developments in recycling of the pgms often appears on the Platinum Today website.

Johnson Matthey provides global refining facilities for pgm-containing scrap. In addition, some other companies specialising in pgm recovery feature in our Organisation Directory.
