Heterogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation 16 - 17 Apr 2012
Brussels, Belgium
“Heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation is of significant importance for the production of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, flavours and fragrances, agrochemicals and fine chemicals. Indeed, an average of approximately 10% of all chemical steps in the production of such chemicals are catalytic hydrogenations. However, due to the multidisciplinary nature of heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation, this technology is frequently improperly or inadequately used, which results in problems during scale up and negatively affects the economy of chemical processes and the quality of products. Participants on this comprehensive course will be familiarized with all the important aspects of heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation.”

“International Symposium on Relations between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis
“The aim of this international symposium is to bring together practitioners in the three fields of catalysis, heterogeneous, homogeneous and enzyme, that utilize mostly nanosize particles. Recent advances in instrumentation, synthesis and reaction studies permit the nanoscale characterization of the catalyst systems, often for the same reaction, under similar experimental conditions. It is hoped that this circumstance will permit the development of correlations of these three different fields of catalysis on the molecular level. To further this goal we aim to uncover and focus on common concepts that emerge from nanoscale studies of structures and dynamics of the three types of catalysts. Another area of focus that will be addressed is the impact on and correlation of nanosciences with catalysis. There is information on the electronic and atomic structures of nanoparticles and their dynamics that should have importance in catalyst design and catalytic activity and selectivity.”

“Vehicle Emissions Reduction Conference – Criteria Pollutants and CO2“
“Regulators are requiring that both criteria pollutants and CO2 emissions are substantially reduced in the next 10 years from both light duty and heavy duty vehicles. The California Air Resources Board is proposing LEVIII standards that tighten current US passenger car pollutants by 70% or more. The US EPA will follow. Light-duty gasoline and diesel engine and emissions technology are needed to address these very low levels.
One day of the conference will be dedicated to provide an update on these cutting edge technologies. Similarly, a second day will be dedicated to update participants on the evolving technologies on heavy-duty diesel PM and NOx control.
The new emission of concern is CO2. Light-duty and heavy-duty CO2 regulations are tightening 20-30% over the next six or seven years. The regulations are demanding, and engine and fuels technologies are being developed to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in both sectors. A third day will be devoted to these technologies.”

Hydrogen Storage Materials 18 - 20 Apr 2011
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, Oxon, UK
“Faraday Discussion 151″
“Hydrogen is widely billed as the fuel of the future. For this to be a reality there is a pressing need for a safe, economic and reliable way to transport hydrogen, particularly for automotive applications. This has prompted a world-wide effort to develop novel materials that are re-usable and capable of storing and releasing significant (> 6 wt%) quantities of hydrogen.
In addition to compressed (either liquid or gaseous) hydrogen, two main themes are being explored: adsorption of hydrogen by materials and “chemical hydrogen” where hydrogen is reacted with a material.
The discussion will focus on both themes, from synthesis and characterisation to application of such novel materials. The focus will be on the wider issues involved in synthetic routes, characterisation, materials properties, rather than simply on examples. The importance of the interplay of theory and experiment will be stressed.”

Is focused on the move from demonstrating fuel cell and hydrogen technologies to taking them to the market. The technology is reaching maturity and the industry is committed to taking the step to mass market. To ground the plenary debates, the Assembly will feature a presentation of an ambitious study on commercialising fuel cell vehicles to be published this year by a wide, global coalition of companies across the value-chain. Based on the companies’ actual technological and cost data, the study provides a reliable comparative assessment of the business case for fuel cell vehicles.
In the plenary sessions, prominent speakers from the industry, public sector and the research community will offer insights into strategies and instruments for commercialisation of fuel cell and hydrogen applications around Europe and overseas. Project presentations will get into the details of the latest technical developments in the field, while specific sessions on the Joint Undertaking’s progress and future strategy will provide the opportunity to have an in-depth view of the programme and participate in shaping its future development and priorities.

“2nd International Symposium on Air Pollution Abatement Catalysis”
The main goal is to discuss, at the both global and molecular level, topics relevant to the actual concepts and models of the catalysis involved in:
1. Mobile sources emissions.
NOx treatment (NOx trap, NH3 SCR, HC SCR, H2 SCR) and Particulate Matter abatement from classical or renewable fuels will be the main topics of this session. Other subjects such as the catalysis for on-board ammonia production or urea decomposition could be developed.
2. Stationary sources for air and water treatment.
Abatement of atmospheric pollution by catalytic decomposition of N2O at high temperatures (nitric acid plants) and its catalytic reduction at medium temperatures will be the main subjects of this session. Catalytic NO reduction or decomposition in flue gases (coal, natural gas) and VOC treatment are also of interest. Additionally, wet catalytic oxidation of pollutants or photocatalysis will also be considered.
3. Clean Fuels and Renewable Energy.
The focus of this session is catalytic coal and biomass gasification and valorization to cleaner fuels. Thus, syngas and fuels production are the main subjects to be discussed. Processes such as reforming (oxy, dry, steam), partial methane oxidation (POM), chemical looping combustion (CLC), chemical looping reforming (CLR), water gas shift (WGS) and Fischer-Tropsch reactions will also be considered at the both global and molecular level.
Special attention will be paid to the design of catalysts based on new concepts and models and on modeling and simulation of materials and reactions.
