Nanotecture's approach to nanomaterials is to employ molecular-level, structure-directing templates. Specifically, aqueous-based lyotropic liquid crystals are used, with the relevant target material (e.g. platinum metal) being deposited from the aqueous phase and 'around' the liquid crystal structures. The liquid crystal molecules are then removed to leave 'pores' in the resultant film or particle. A range of pore geometries including the cylindrical pores of the hexagonal phase and the three dimensional network of the bicontinuous cubic phase may be fabricated.
