Subject: Platinum catalysts to lower NOx emissions

When a platinum oxidation catalyst is added to fuel, does reaction with NOx take place in the flow? Can the Pt be deposited on pipes and react there?

In addition, is there a reference for both or either happening?

Answer

There is very little information in the scientific journals about this type of catalysis, but the following link provides the most comprehensive information that I've seen: http://www.epstechnologies.com/how.html.

However, I'm not convinced that lower NOx emissions are caused by catalytic reduction or dissociation of NO and NO2, when Pt alone is added to the fuel. Instead, I suspect that, by promoting an even combustion process, it prevents the occurrence of local hot spots in which NOx can be formed.
