Subject: Handworking platinum jewellery

How can contamination of platinum surfaces be avoided when handworking platinum jewellery?

Answer

Guidance and advice on many aspects of working platinum jewellery can be found in the ‘Platinum Jewelry Technical Manual’, in “An Introduction to Platinum”, available to download in PDF format from Johnson Matthey NY.

This includes a section on handworking, which covers aspects such as hot-working, cold-working, annealing and contamination, as well as specific handworking processes and advice on the maintenance of platinum working equipment.

There is also advice on good housekeeping at the end of the finishing section of the same manual.
