Subject: Platinum jewellery in India

Q1: How long has platinum been used in jewellery in India?

Q2: Was platinum used in jewellery between 1850 and 1900 in India?

Q3: What is the percentage of platinum used in jewellery in India?

Answer

In answer to the first two questions, the use of platinum for jewellery in India can be traced back to the early 1900s, although it was mostly limited to royalty during that time.

For example, in 1925 the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala had a platinum and diamond necklace made by the House of Cartier, which became known as the Patiala necklace. The piece took three years to complete, and contained 2,930 diamonds set in five rows of platinum chains, including the seventh largest cut diamond in the world.

All platinum jewellery currently sold in India through the Platinum Guild programme is 95% platinum.
