Subject: In the short term what do you expect to happen to palladium supplies and prices?
Answer
Palladium is mostly produced as the byproduct of platinum or nickel mining, so its production depends to some extent upon the output of those two metals.
The major sources of palladium are Russia, where it is a byproduct of nickel production, and South Africa, where it is a byproduct of platinum production.
Palladium is also mined both as a principal metal and as a byproduct in North America.
Increasing amounts of palladium are expected to be recovered from scrapped autocatalysts by secondary refining.
In 2004 the total palladium supply is predicted by Johnson Matthey to be 7.16 million oz. See Johnson Matthey's Platinum 2004 Interim Review. This publication also gives substantial information on the demand and supply of palladium.
The Platinum Today website also gives current prices of palladium and historical data charts of prices beginning in 1992.
