Summer School on Modern Concepts for Creating and Analyzing Surfaces and Nanoscale Materials
Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Costa Brava, Spain
"Understanding surface properties and the atomistic processes that govern them is critically important for the creation and performance of advanced materials serving modern technologies such as electronic, magnetic, and optical devices, sensing, catalysis, or coating. First-principles simulations are a powerful approach for reaching this understanding, in particular when the multi-scale nature (from nanoscopic to mesoscopic and beyond) of phenomena in real materials is properly addressed. This summer school gathers leading theoretical and experimental researchers in the materials sciences to review recent advances in such simulations in the light of topical, material-specific problems and experimental findings.
This Marie Curie Psi-k Training summer school is ideally suited for young researchers (graduate students, postdocs, junior faculty) from physics, chemistry, and materials sciences who seek to come abreast with the latest developments in the field and discuss their own research projects with their peers and senior experts.
All participants are asked to present a poster on their research.
Young colleagues are invited to take part in the "Young Investigator Competition". The winner will be awarded a diploma plus 500 Euro in cash."

Nanotechnology for Sustainable Energy
Universitätszentrum Obergurgl, Ötz Valley, near Innsbruck, Austria
ESF-FWF Conference in Partnership with LFUI
"Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) can contribute to a positive development in this direction in several ways, for instance by contributing to more efficient harvesting of sun light, by providing thermoelectric materials to harvest energy from temperature gradients, by providing energy storage technology e.g. in batteries and for hydrogen storage, by enabling light-weight materials for transportation, by influencing the energy efficiency of industrial production and of household energy use (e.g., through fuel cells, catalysis, reduced friction losses), and by offering schemes to clean up harmful emissions resulting from various energy systems.
Topical areas covered by this conference are those where N&N will, or may, have an impact on the development of a sustainable energy system, including environmental aspects. The conference includes both basic science of relevance for energy/environmental technology and more application oriented research. The objective is to gather experts in the respective fields at one conference, with the aim to make both an inventory and exposure of the state-of-the-art N&N based energy research, technologies and opportunities. We thereby hope to foster scientific excellence in this area, to identify synergies between disciplines and people, and to catalyze global contacts and collaborations among world-leading experts and laboratories. The conference has a strong educational character in as much as it shall provide a younger generation of researchers with a vision, as well as the knowledge and tools to realize this vision."

Metals in Medicine
Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire, U.S.A.
"The intersection of Inorganic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry offers a rich scientific landscape to address current unsolved problems in clinical health care. Metals in Medicine is a field that is growing far beyond the classic “success stories” of cisplatin and Gd-MRI contrast agents. At this crossroad, there are nearly unlimited possibilities for applying the unique chemical properties of inorganic building blocks to difficult problems in all areas of health.
This meeting will focus on developing an understanding of the big picture opportunities, ongoing forefront research, and necessary approaches required to move basic scientists closer to real results in the clinic. We also expect the meeting to appeal to researchers from a wide range of backgrounds, facilitating better collaborations and partnerships among inorganic chemists, biologists, physicians, and the pharmaceutical industry.
The meeting will be organized around presenting both current clinical practices and discovery-level research in seven medicinally relevant areas (Oncology, Diagnostics, Infectious Diseases, Neurodegenerative Disease, Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolic Diseases, and Aging). Speakers and poster presenters are encouraged to present the most pressing biological problems, best strategies, key criteria involved in design, and appropriate research networks required to address the special issues associated with problems in medicinal bioinorganic chemistry."

Bio-fuels: Specifications and Performance Symposium
Paris, France
"There is a growing abundance of global conferences and symposia on bio fuels simply because of the political and legislative pressures to encourage the use of these alternatives. This has been brought on by the wake of continuing high oil prices, the growing insecurity of crude oil and petroleum based fuels, and increasing concerns about road transport's contribution to global warming. However, virtually all of these conferences neglect the in-depth issues of global fuel specifications and how these affect the performance of future fuels in the vehicles in the market place. This symposium will be unique for it will be organized in support of the needs of the motor industry and its alliances with representation from the U.S., Europe and Asia. All will address the question, "how will rapid growth in global bio fuels affect the global specifications and performance of future fuels?""

"6th World Congress on Oxidation Catalysis"
"Towards an integrated approach in innovation and development"
The Congress is intended to offer an update of recent innovation in fundamental and applied aspects and it is focused on highlighting progress, new developments and new directions in oxidation. Importance will be given to heterogeneous, homogeneous, bio- and enzymatic catalysis. Our goal is to give the opportunity to researchers from different fields of oxidation catalysis to exchange points of view, to meet convergence in the research domains and to take advantage of the progress, in order to create a synergy of knowledge.
