Nanotechnology for Sustainable Energy
Universitätszentrum Obergurgl, Ötz Valley, near Innsbruck, Austria
ESF-FWF Conference in Partnership with LFUI
"Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) can contribute to a positive development in this direction in several ways, for instance by contributing to more efficient harvesting of sun light, by providing thermoelectric materials to harvest energy from temperature gradients, by providing energy storage technology e.g. in batteries and for hydrogen storage, by enabling light-weight materials for transportation, by influencing the energy efficiency of industrial production and of household energy use (e.g., through fuel cells, catalysis, reduced friction losses), and by offering schemes to clean up harmful emissions resulting from various energy systems.
Topical areas covered by this conference are those where N&N will, or may, have an impact on the development of a sustainable energy system, including environmental aspects. The conference includes both basic science of relevance for energy/environmental technology and more application oriented research. The objective is to gather experts in the respective fields at one conference, with the aim to make both an inventory and exposure of the state-of-the-art N&N based energy research, technologies and opportunities. Bio-fuels: Specifications and Performance Symposium
Paris, France
"There is a growing abundance of global conferences and symposia on bio fuels simply because of the political and legislative pressures to encourage the use of these alternatives. This has been brought on by the wake of continuing high oil prices, the growing insecurity of crude oil and petroleum based fuels, and increasing concerns about road transport's contribution to global warming. However, virtually all of these conferences neglect the in-depth issues of global fuel specifications and how these affect the performance of future fuels in the vehicles in the market place. This symposium will be unique for it will be organized in support of the needs of the motor industry and its alliances with representation from the U.S., Europe and Asia. All will address the question, "how will rapid growth in global bio fuels affect the global specifications and performance of future fuels?""

Catalytic Cross Coupling Reactions in Aromatic and Heteroaromatic Synthesis
Dublin, Ireland
A 3 day course given by Professor Victor Snieckus, Queen's University, Kingston, Canada:
(a) To provide a conceptual framework for the multitude of reactions currently emanating from the impact of transition metal catalysis on the field of aromatic and heteroaromatic synthesis and to place it into practical perspective;
(b) To present a systematic picture of C-C bond coupling methods (Suzuki-Miyaura, Negishi, Kumada-Corriu, Stille, and, most recently, Hiyama) according to hybridization format;
(c) To survey other rapidly evolving synthetically promising catalytic processes (Buchwald-Hartwig, Heck, Ullmann, Sonogashira, Grubbs) in a systematic manner using C-N, C-O, C-S formalism;
(d) To connect directed ortho metalation (DoM) strategies to these blossoming areas of transition metal catalysed processes;
(e) To contrast and compare the above modern processes with classical but still useful synthetic methods.
The desired consequence is the facility (both on paper and in the lab!) to use these modern strategies for the regiospecific construction of polysubstituted aromatic/heteroaromatic systems and for the rational assemblage of complex bioactive molecules and natural products. Normal synthetic and mechanistic organic knowledge will be assumed. Retrosynthetic analysis, specific mechanistic features of old and new reactions, and theoretical basis of synthetic principles will guide the presentation, discussion and problem solving sessions.

Building on Breakthroughs in Polymer Fuel Cells
London, U.K.
"A workshop to discuss approaches for bridging the gap between research breakthroughs and proven product specifications for the next generation of low cost polymer MEAs.
Dramatic cost reduction is required before fuel cell mass markets, particularly in road transport, can be accessed. As Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn recently put it: "Do the math and you figure out that we will have to reduce the cost of [our fuel cell] car by more than 95 percent". We believe that the UK has distinctive capabilities in polymer materials, novel catalysts and MEA development that are highly relevant to meeting this challenge.
We are seeking to gather an audience of key researchers, members of fuel cell value chains, investors and public-sector funders to debate practical approaches to meeting this challenge and to help identify how Carbon Trust support – such as directed research investments of £3–10m – could best be deployed."

Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms
Galveston, Texas, U.S.A.
"Chemical phenomena of intense current interest – catalysis, atmospheric chemistry, the creation of new materials, small molecule activation, driving chemical reactions with renewable energy sources, green chemical processes, biological production of chemicals, etc. – intrinsically involve reactions of elements from throughout the periodic table. This conference focuses on the mechanisms of these reactions and the techniques that are used for elucidation of reaction mechanisms. Our goal is to bring together a diverse group of participants – a worldwide collection of researchers representing academics, national laboratories, and industry – to share broad-based approaches – kinetics, spectroscopy, isotopic effects, and computations – to understanding of how reactions occur in many contexts – catalysis, coordination chemistry, main group reaction, atomospheric, biological, electrochemical, fuels, solar conversion, and organic. Participants will receive exposure to a wide range of techniques used to study reaction mechanisms of contemporary interest.
The program has nine open slots for short poster talks. Everybody is welcome to apply for one of these by simply dropping a message to the Chair. The speakers will be selected by a committee shortly before the beginning of the conference. It is anticipated that the Chair will be able to provide financial aid toward travel expenses of those selected to speak."

Royal Society of Chemistry, Council Chamber, Burlington House, London, U.K.
RSC Historical Chemistry Group
RSC Chilterns and Middlesex Local Section
Will survey the historical background to the remarkable development of organometallic chemistry to its modern form as a discipline linking inorganic, organic and catalytic chemistry. The first organometallic compounds were made in the mid-19th century by Sir Edward Frankland, the subject of a Wheeler Bequest lecture by Professor Colin Russell which will also be published as an Occasional Paper. The other five talks are also by eminent experts in the field and cover main-group organometallic compounds, metal carbonyl, metal olefin and sandwich complexes, and a final lecture surveys current and potential future developments in the area. The lectures will attempt to highlight the crucial, often accidental, discoveries that spurred advances in the field, together with the scientists who made those discoveries. The challenges to valence theory on the one hand and the close links with industrial processes and organic synthesis and catalysis on the other will be emphasised.
The meeting is free but seating is limited to fifty on a first-come-first-served basis.

Recent advances in instrumentation, synthesis and reaction studies permit the nanoscale and molecular characterization of the catalyst systems, often for the same reaction, under similar experimental conditions. It is hoped that this circumstance will permit the development of correlations of these three different fields of catalysis on the molecular level. To further this goal we aim to uncover and focus on common concepts that emerge from nanoscale studies of structures and dynamics of the three types of catalysis. The use of these catalysts in selective organic transformations will also be an important topic of this conference."

Approximately 90% of solar cell production is currently based on first generation crystalline silicon, but second generation solar cells based on thin film technology on inexpensive and lightweight substrates are now emerging and rapidly increasing their market share. This one day meeting provides a forum to help assess the current state of the art. It brings together a list of distinguished invited speakers whose expertise covers the available range of thin film technologies."

Advanced Materials for Sensor Design
Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland
Organised by SCI's Republic of Ireland Group and SCI's Materials Chemistry Group
"Nanoparticles, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes. Organic conductors and light emitting polymers. Shape memory alloys and polymers. Photonic crystals and silsesquioxanes. It is difficult to think of anything that could be called an 'advanced material' that has not found some application, experimental or commercial, in sensor design.
This is an exciting time in the field, and a good time to foster greater interactions between materials scientists, polymer chemists and sensor engineers.
This meeting, possibly the first of its type, will therefore draw together industrialists and academics involved in both the preparation of novel materials and their use in ever more accurate and selective sensors."
